Cost to Add an Outlet: 64 Outlet Types Priced Line by Line (2026)
From a wall outlet to a hot tub circuit: every job priced with its labor, wire, breaker and device, next to what three kinds of contractors would charge and the installed prices published online.
Every outlet, priced
Every job assumes a route through an unfinished basement or attic, a panel with room for the breaker, no trenching unless marked, and no wall repair beyond the box cutout. Rates are the median U.S. baseline; your area may run higher or lower.
This is not a price. These are job costs: labor and materials only. No contractor performs work at job cost. Overhead and profit go on top, and how much depends on what that contractor's business requires to operate. The three customer price columns show that job with overhead and profit added at three levels.
Side by side
Not a price. Job cost, then customer price at three overhead levels.

Published installed prices are other publishers' homeowner ranges for similar but not identical work, read October 14, 2026. They include those contractors' markup, so compare them with the customer price columns, not with job cost. Open any job for its line items. Permit and inspection fees are not in the job cost; requirements vary by town.
Which price is closer to yours?
- Low-Overhead, +30%: A handyman or owner-operator who does the work with a small crew and no office. Usually the lowest quote. The owner handles scheduling, questions and callbacks around the work itself.
- Established, +50%: A remodeling company with a crew, an office, insurance and someone to answer the phone. Close to the average remodeler's overhead in the National Association of Home Builders cost-of-doing-business survey.
- Full-Service, +100%: A design-build firm with designers, a salesperson and a project manager who runs the job. The extra pays for planning, coordination and one point of contact from design to final inspection.
Higher markup means more business behind the job, not by itself better work, and a lower markup is not by itself a better deal. For contractors: how each markup splits into overhead and profit is in the overhead categories guide.
What moves the price
A new circuit
Running a new circuit from the panel adds the circuit labor, the breaker and the permit: a bedroom outlet goes from about $219 on an existing circuit to about $495 on its own.
240V and amperage
A 240V circuit takes a two-pole breaker and heavier cable. At 40 to 60 amps it is 6/3 copper, which is why a range or EV circuit runs $1,050 to $1,124 while a 30 amp dryer circuit is about $880.
Distance from the panel
Cable is priced by the foot with 15% for routing. Most jobs here assume 25 feet from an existing circuit or about 50 feet from the panel; a long run adds wire and pulling time.
Buried runs
A run to a yard post, shed, gate, pool pad or RV pedestal adds a trench, PVC conduit and outdoor-rated wire, roughly $10 a foot. Rock, roots or boring under a driveway cost more.
Finished walls
With no unfinished basement or attic to drop in from, the electrician opens the wall to fish the cable, and each opening is patched and painted. That can double a simple outlet.
Panel capacity
Jobs marked for a load check need the panel's capacity confirmed first. A full panel may take tandem breakers, a subpanel, or a service upgrade that is its own job.
Methodology
Each of the 64 jobs is a short written description, the way a homeowner or contractor would describe it. The Clamp estimator read each one, picked the assemblies (an added outlet, a new circuit, an outdoor outlet, a generator inlet) and priced every line on the October 2026 median U.S. baseline. The descriptions, the assemblies and every priced line are in the published data.
Job cost is labor and materials before overhead and profit. The customer price columns multiply it by 1.3, 1.5 and 2.0: illustrative profiles, not recommended markups. Permits are shown beside the job cost, not in it, because fees depend on the town.
Published installed prices come from HomeGuide, Angi, Tesla and other publishers named in the sources. They are homeowner prices that already include a contractor's markup, often for a broader or narrower scope, so they are a reference, not a check on any single line.
The job descriptions, assemblies and every priced line are published as data.
Questions
How much does it cost to add an outlet?
On an existing circuit, about $176 to $316 in direct job cost, most often near $220 to $250, when the cable can drop in from an unfinished basement or attic. A new circuit from the panel starts near $484. Add the contractor's markup of 30% to 100% for the price you would be quoted, and the permit if your area requires one.
Do I need a permit to add an outlet?
Most areas require an electrical permit for a new circuit, and many for any new outlet. Where one applies it is shown separately here, typically $88 to $500, because fees vary by town. A new circuit in this guide always carries one.
How much does a 240V outlet cost?
A 240V circuit runs about $640 to $1,125 in direct job cost within about 50 feet of a panel with room: about $880 for a dryer, $1,050 for a range and $1,124 for a 14-50 EV charger outlet. A tankless water heater's several heavy circuits run near $2,860. A 50 amp circuit uses heavier 6/3 cable and costs more than a 30 amp one. A full panel or a long or buried run adds to it.
How much does an outdoor outlet cost?
An outdoor GFCI outlet tied into an existing circuit through the rim joist is about $526 in direct job cost here, including the weatherproof box and in-use cover. A post or pedestal out in the yard needs its own circuit and a trench, about $912 for 40 feet buried.
Why is my quote higher than these numbers?
These are job costs: labor and materials only, with no overhead or profit. No contractor works at job cost. The three customer price columns show the same job at 30%, 50% and 100% markup, the range from an owner-operator to a full-service design-build firm. A quote outside that range reflects a different business, scope or site.
What makes an outlet cost more?
Distance from the panel, whether it needs a new circuit, 240V and higher amperage, a buried run, finished walls with no attic or basement access, and a panel without room. Each is priced as its own line in the job, so you can see which one drives the total.
