Clamp vs Clear Estimates: A maintained cost database, or the estimate carried through the job
Clear Estimates is a maintained remodeling cost database with hundreds of templates, AI drafting, built-in e-signature and payable invoices, from $59 a month billed annually. Clamp starts with a free AI estimate at your own direct cost and markup, then carries that estimate into signed milestones, customer decisions, change orders and actual job cost.

Estimate, cost and price

Estimate against actual
Sample data. Clamp's estimate shows the job cost, the markup applied once and where the money goes, and the job cost review compares the estimate with what the job actually consumed.

Verdict
Clamp may fit when
- You price from your own material costs, labor rates and one company markup, not a published database
- You want the first AI estimate free, before you commit to a plan
- You want the estimate to become the signed proposal, the payment milestones and the change orders on the same job
- You want actual job cost, receipts, vendor bills and time on site compared with the estimate at close
- You run the job from your phone, with a crew or subs who need the job and schedule without seeing your prices
- You want customer decisions tracked after signing, with what each one blocks
Clear Estimates may fit when
- You take on work you have not priced before and want a cost library adjusted to your zip code and updated every quarter
- You want hundreds of remodeling templates as a starting point
- You bid from plans, blueprints or photos and want the AI to read them (Pro)
- You want separate markup percentages for material, labor and subcontractor cost, with per-part overrides
- You want card and ACH payments taken on the invoice itself and estimate totals pushed to QuickBooks Online
- You run projects in Buildertrend and want the estimate exported there (Pro)
Before you compare them
- Clear Estimates and Clamp both produce an itemized estimate from a typed description, both put a payment schedule on a signed proposal, both lock a signed proposal behind a change order, and both invoice. The overlap is real.
- Clear Estimates' documented advantages are its cost data and templates: locally adjusted costs for 400 U.S. areas, updated every quarter, and hundreds of preloaded project templates, built over 20 years. Its pages disagree on the counts (13,000+ line items on the pricing page, 15,000+ and 'over 12,000 parts' on the homepage; 400+ templates against 500+). Clamp does not publish a maintained third-party cost database; its numbers are your numbers.
- Clamp's advantage is what happens after the estimate: milestones tied to job events with evidence, a decisions list, change orders that show their effect on the contract, and a job cost review of estimate against actual. No job costing, time tracking or mileage article was found in Clear Estimates' Knowledge Base.
- Clear Estimates' AI matches your description to priced items in its library and, in its own words, does not calculate or change costs. Clamp's AI drafts at direct cost from your description, then your markup goes on once.
- Clear Estimates is cloud software run in a browser that, in its own words, works best on desktop; its clients sign from any device. Clamp is an iOS and Android app with a web portal.
- Clear Estimates takes card and ACH payments on its invoices; its fees and processor are not stated on the invoicing page. Clamp does not process payments; you add your own payment link and record what was paid.
- Clear Estimates' QuickBooks Online export sends estimate summary totals for material, labor and subcontractor cost, not taxes or discounts. Clamp has an accountant export package and no QuickBooks integration. Neither is accounting software.
- Clamp does no plan takeoff and its AI works from a written description. Clear Estimates Pro reads plans, blueprints and photos; Clear Estimates offers nothing for sketches or drawings.
- "Not found" on this page means not found on Clear Estimates' current pricing page, homepage, invoicing page or Knowledge Base. It does not mean Clear Estimates cannot do it another way.
- Neither product was tested against the other. No speed or accuracy claim is made about either AI.
Workflow
| Feature | Clamp | Clear Estimates |
|---|---|---|
| Where the estimate's numbers come from | Your direct costs: your saved labor rates, the materials you price, allowances for what is not chosen yet | A library of locally adjusted costs for 400 U.S. areas, updated every quarter (13,000+ line items on the pricing page, 15,000+ on the homepage) |
| Your own labor rates and parts | Rates saved once per role and used on every estimate | Suggested labor rates by trade code you adjust, flowing to every part that uses them; parts you cannot find can be added and the library customized to your pricing |
| Estimate at cost, then markup | Every line at direct cost; the markup from your overhead and profit goal goes on once | Library costs are your cost before markup and tax; separate material, labor and subcontractor markup percentages per project, with per-part overrides |
| AI estimates | A draft at direct cost from a project description, then your markup; 1 free estimate on the website, 3 free credits in the app, then 25 or 50 a month by plan | Start with AI from a detailed typed description, matched to library items without calculating or changing costs; unlimited on paid plans, five requests on the trial |
| Estimates from plans or photos | Not offered; the AI works from your written description and Clamp does no plan takeoff | Pro: upload plans, blueprints or job site photos (jpg, png, webp, pdf) into the AI Estimate Builder |
| Templates and reuse | Saved rates and saved estimate descriptions | Preloaded project templates (400+ on the pricing page, 500+ on the homepage) plus pre-written contract language and your boilerplate |
| Quote or proposal e-signature | Proposals signed in the customer portal (Assistant and Teams) | Built-in e-signature from Standard: the client signs from an emailed link on any device, no account needed, and the signed PDF is saved to the project |
| Progress billing | Milestones tied to job events, each with a checklist of evidence; billed as the stage starts | A payment schedule of fixed amounts, percentages and a balance due at the bottom of the proposal, with due dates; invoices created from it |
| Customer decisions after signing | A Decisions needed list: needed by, what it blocks, who owes the answer, the resolution | Alternates: optional work the client approves or declines on the proposal at signing; a decision list after signing was not found on Clear Estimates' pricing page or Knowledge Base |
| Change orders | A change order on every plan: priced and billed, e-signed in the portal on Assistant and Teams, showing its effect on the contract total and schedule | A signed proposal locks and cannot be edited without creating a change order; a signed change order locks completely |
| Job costing | Every plan: receipts, vendor bills, time at the loaded rate, returns; reviewed against the estimate at close | A Cost Status Report of invoices and customer payments per project; actual costs against the estimate were not found on Clear Estimates' pricing page or Knowledge Base |
| Time on site | Logged by role, or detected automatically when you leave a job site; not a GPS time clock with geofencing | Not found on Clear Estimates' pricing page or Knowledge Base |
| Business mileage log | Automatic trip detection, confirmed per trip, at the IRS rate for its date | Not found on Clear Estimates' pricing page or Knowledge Base |
| Customer portal | Sign proposals and change orders, see milestones, invoices and photos, answer decisions (Assistant and Teams) | Proposals and invoices go out as links or PDFs and the Cost Status Report can be emailed; a persistent customer portal was not found on Clear Estimates' pages |
| Payments | Not processed by Clamp: add your own payment link and record what was paid | Card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover) and ACH payments on the invoice, paid to your bank account; fees and the processor are not stated on the invoicing page |
| Accounting | An accountant export package; Clamp is not accounting software | QuickBooks Online export of estimate summary totals (material, labor, subcontractor) as a QuickBooks estimate; taxes and discounts not exported |
| Mobile | iOS and Android app plus a web portal | Cloud software run in a browser that works best on desktop; a native mobile app was not found on Clear Estimates' pricing page or Knowledge Base |
| Team, subs and hand-off | Up to 10 accounts on Teams, plus unlimited free sub invites who never see your prices; the job stays in Clamp through closeout | Additional users $9 a month on Pro, included user count not stated; estimate export to Buildertrend and CRM connections through Zapier on Pro |
What was and was not tested
What was compared: Hands-on testing of either product. Neither was tested against the other, and no speed or accuracy claim is made. Documented, not tested.
| Statement | Basis |
|---|---|
| Published by Clamp, using each product's own pricing pages and documentation. | Clamp's own statement |
| One person, entry plan, billed annually: Clear Estimates Standard is $708 a year (calculated) and Clamp Solo is $149.99. Standard includes the cost database, templates, unlimited AI estimates, e-signature and payable invoices; Solo includes the job workflow without the customer portal. | Calculated from published prices |
| Five people with job costing, billed annually: Clear Estimates Pro with four additional users is $1,620 a year (calculated, assuming one included user) and buys estimating seats; job costing was not found. Clamp Teams is $999.99 for up to 10 accounts with job costing on every plan. The plans are not equivalent: Pro includes a cost database, plan and photo AI and a Buildertrend export that Clamp does not offer. | Calculated from published prices |
| Both vendors describe their AI the same way: it drafts, you review. Clear Estimates states that its AI does not calculate or change costs; the price is the library's for your area. Clamp's draft is at your direct cost with your markup applied after. | Verified against a published source |
Switching
- Export or print your estimates, signed proposals, Cost Status Reports and customer list from Clear Estimates before you cancel; the Knowledge Base has a cancellation article.
- Do not assume Clear Estimates projects or its parts library can be imported into Clamp; confirm formats first.
- Write down the labor rates and markup percentages you tuned in Clear Estimates so you can set your rates and one markup in Clamp on day one.
- If you take card or ACH payments on Clear Estimates invoices, set up your own payment link before you switch.
- If you bid from plans or photos, keep in mind Clamp's AI works from a written description and does no takeoff.
- Finish signed jobs where they started; start new ones in Clamp.
Questions
Can I use my own labor rates, material costs and markup in Clear Estimates?
Yes. Clear Estimates lets you adjust labor rates by trade, add your own parts and set separate material, labor and subcontractor markups, with overrides on individual parts. Its AI matches descriptions to the standard library rather than your custom parts. Clamp prices lines at direct cost and applies your company markup once at the end, so compare how each stores rates and applies markup.
How much does Clear Estimates cost for a solo remodeler?
Clear Estimates Standard is $79 a month billed monthly or $59 a month billed annually ($708 a year, calculated). Pro is $119 a month or $99 billed annually, with additional users at $9 a month. Every plan has a 30-day free trial and no contract, but the pricing page does not state how many users each plan includes. Clamp Solo is $19.99 a month or $149.99 a year.
Does Clear Estimates handle change orders and actual job costs?
Clear Estimates handles change orders: a signed proposal locks and can only change through a change order, and a signed change order locks completely. Actual job costing was not found on the pages checked; its Cost Status Report summarizes invoices and customer payments, not receipts, bills and crew hours against the estimate. Confirm with Clear Estimates if you need estimate-versus-actual tracking.
Can Clear Estimates price a bathroom remodel from a written description?
Yes. Clear Estimates' Start with AI matches a detailed description and measurements to priced items in its localized library, and Pro can also read plans or photos. Clamp drafts a direct-cost estimate from a plain description and shows markup separately. Clear Estimates says its AI does not calculate or change database costs, and either draft needs your review before it reaches a customer.
Can I run Clear Estimates from my phone instead of a desktop?
Clear Estimates runs in a web browser and describes a desktop as the best place to work, though customers can sign from any device. A native phone app was not found on its official pages. Its localized library suits office estimating; Clamp's iOS and Android apps keep estimates, change orders, receipts, time on site and mileage in the job record on the phone.
Does Clear Estimates work offline?
Clear Estimates says it works on any device with an internet connection, and offline use is not described on its official pages. Clamp's leads, estimates, proposals, change orders and invoices work with no signal on every plan; AI drafts, e-signing and the customer portal need a connection when you use them. If you estimate on site in basements or rural lots, test offline use first.
